Koeman pressure mounts: Barcelona vs Benfica in Champions League
Barcelona vs Benfica : Barcelona’s luck fell again after Benfica beat the weakened Catalan club by 3-0 points in the group stage of the Champions League on Wednesday.
It was the second consecutive defeat in this competition by three goals for Ronald Koeman’s side, after losing to Bayern Munich two weeks ago with the same result.
The pressure builds on Koeman, who has come under immense criticism for an equally lackluster start to the La Liga season.
Uruguayan star Darwin Núñez scored two goals for Benfica that night to lead the Portuguese powerhouse to victory on an electric night in Lisbon. Núñez’s first goal came within three minutes of play when he sped over the Barça defense and hit the left post.
Benfica’s Lucas Verissima made one last block to defend against Luuk de Jong from close range as Barcelona tried to get back into the game, but he was second best from the start.
Jorge Jesús’ team continued to press after the break. Rafa Silva doubled Benfica’s lead when he pounced on Joao Mario’s first shot.
Benfica continued the onslaught when Núñez saw a shot he hit in the text on a direct pass, only to hit 79.
Barcelona ended the night with 10 men after Eric Garcia received his second yellow card that night.
Barça are last in Group E with no points in two games, six behind leaders Bayern and four behind Benfica. Dynamo Kiev is in third place with one point.
