Lionel Messi, the current PSG, and former Barcelona star were crowned the 2021 World Player of the Year Ballon d’Or, at today’s ceremony in France.

Messi received the seventh Ballon d’Or in his history. Which he won after leading Argentina to the Copa America title, after beating Brazil at home, in the final.

The Argentine star also won this year’s La Liga top scorer title with Barcelona, winning with the Catalan team the King’s Cup title.

The Argentina legend edged out several stars who competed for him to snatch the award, most notably Robert Lewandowski (Poland/Bayern Munich), Mohamed Salah (Egypt/Liverpool), Karim Benzema (France/Real Madrid), Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium/Manchester City), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal o/Juventus/Manchester.

Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi of Argentina has expressed his great delight after winning the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time in his career.

Messi won the award for 2021, during the ceremony at the Theatre du Châtelet, on Monday, in the French capital Paris.

“It’s great to be here during this night. I probably don’t know how long I’m going to be at this level,” Messi said in remarks during the ceremony.

“But I must first remember everyone who stood behind me and beside me,” he added.

He continued: “I would like to keep fighting with the new club (Paris Saint-Germain) and I would also like to thank all my Barcelona teammates for my former team, as well as for Argentina.”

“It was a big dream to keep fighting to win the prize all those times,” he continued.

“I repeat, I thank all the players of Argentina and Barcelona and my wife and sons. And I also thank my mother and my father,” he added.

“It’s a huge honor for me to be a competitor to Lewandowski for this award. He probably deserved it last year. And I think he deserves to be among the best in the world,” he concluded.
