when Luka Modric converted a penalty after Ibrahima Konate fouled Ante Budimir.
France had three of the top four scorers in Europe’s major leagues in Karim Benzema,
Kylian Mbappe, and Christopher Nkunku, but they failed to score.

While Mike Maignan gets a hand on the penalty, the France goalkeeper fails to push it round the post. Croatia has taken the lead early on.
17 minutes: France is all over the place at the moment,
with Maignan rushing off his line and making a dangerous challenge on Budimir before sliding in on Josip Brekalo outside the area and bundling the ball away.
Guendouzi is arrested shortly after barreling into Brekalo with a raised elbow. To say the least, the hosts have had a shaky start.
If they were planning on playing a 4-4-2, Mbappé and Nkunku on each side of Benzema have rapidly devolved into a 4-3-3. On existing evidence, it isn’t actually working.
28 minutes: Mbappé is doing everything he can to help France, hugging the left sideline and stretching Croatia’s defence. After a flurry of activity in attack, Nkunku finds an opening and blasts a long-range shot past the near post.
After losing 1-0 to Croatia in Paris, France can no longer qualify for the Nations League semi-finals.
