Before the game began,
all eyes were on Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup and whether he would select Bernardo Silva,
Jules Kounde,
sent in a cross that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang met with a header from six yards out that went straight at Stefan Ortega in the City goal,
giving Barcelona a chance to take the lead shortly after.
Early on,
the hosts absolutely controlled possession,
but a run of offsides by both teams kept the match from developing any real fluency.
Julian Alvarez gave City the lead after 21 minutes against the flow of play when Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena mishandled a routine cross right at his feet. For the young stopper,
a nightmare.
Kounde made another error that almost gave City a second. Young midfielder Cole Palmer gained possession of the ball in open space,
but instead of passing,
he shot,
blasting his attempt over the bar.
Aubameyang’s exquisite volley that went under Ortega and into the City goal drew Barcelona even a few minutes later.
Excellent opportunities for City were created early in the second half. Alvarez’s close-range attempt from some how fluffed before Riyad Mahrez’s third attempt
City led for the first 45 seconds of the second half,
but Barcelona took the lead after 66 minutes. After Kevin De Bruyne
was intercepted in possession,
Frenkie de Jong,
who played exceptionally well,
completed the scoring.
Alvarez had the chance to seal the deal almost quickly after,
but he blew it. Another shot
that was directly in his path was saved by Pena,
but the young Argentinean this time lost control of his effort and sent the ball sailing over the crossbar. Fortunately,
City didn’t have to suck their wounds for very long since Palmer tapped in after a cross from Joao Cancelo.
who was stretchered off the field,
the clock had already passed well over 90 minutes when Memphis Depay finally scored to tie the score.
