Serbia beat Norway to clinch promotion to top tier

Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic scored as Serbia beat Norway to clinch promotion to the top tier of the Nations League.

Needing to win, Mitrovic slotted home Ivan Ilic’s pass from 16 yards for his 50th Serbia goal,

and sixth in his past four games.

It was his 14th Nations League goal and doubled Serbia’s lead

after Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic’s strike put them ahead.

Serbia have won promotion in two of the three Nations Leagues,

having started in League C.

Norway would have been promoted with a point in Oslo.

Mitrovic’s 14 goals in the Nations League is a record and he is also the leading goalscorer

in this year’s tournament.

He has scored four goals in his last four away games.

He has now netted 12 goals in his past 11 matches for club

and country and 58 in 65 games since the start of last season.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland played the full 90 minutes for Norway,

and had four shots, but failed to score for the 10th time in 23 international games.

The other game in Group B4 saw Sweden relegated to League C with a 1-1 draw with Slovenia.

Aleksandar Mitrovic outshines Erling Braut Haaland as Serbia pip Norway to top spot

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his 50th goal for Serbia to earn his country a 2-0 win over Norway this evening,

securing promotion to the top tier of the UEFA Nations League in the process.

The Fulham striker continued his red-hot form in front of goal

to add a second for his side – his 12th goal in his last 11 games for club and country

– after Dusan Vlahovic had given them the lead in Oslo.

Norway’s own star man Erling Braut Haaland was kept quiet at the other end as his scoring streak came to an end at the worst possible time for his country,

who surrender top spot and promotion at the final hurdle.

Vlahovic broke the deadline three minutes before half time to put Serbia in command and shift the onus onto Norway,

but Stale Solbakken’s side had no answer.

Instead,

it was the visitors who got the all-important next goal,

and it was a landmark one for Mitrovic as he became the first Serbian player to score 50 goals for his country, doing so in just his 76th appearance.

It was a telling contribution which also saw Mitrovic move level with Haaland as the top scorer in the 2022-23 Nations League with six goals – an award they will now share – while his tally of 14 goals overall in the Nations League is a new record.

Elsewhere in Group B4, Emil Forsberg’s equaliser just before half time earned Sweden a 1-1 draw with Slovenia which keeps them in the group and relegates their opponents in the process.

Forsberg’s strike cancelled out an earlier wondergoal from Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko,

who broke the deadlock with a Marco van Basten-esque first-time volley from a tight angle.

Also in the Nations League this evening, Czech Republic will drop down to League B after losing to Switzerland,

while Spain pinched an 88th-minute winner against Portugal in Braga to pip their Iberian rivals to top spot and a place in the semi-finals.

Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic netted his 50th international goal as his side outclassed Norway with a 2-0 win to top Nations League B Group 4 on Tuesday and gain promotion to League A.

Serbia finished the campaign on 13 points from six games,

three ahead of second-placed Norway, who would have won the group with a draw. Slovenia finished third on six points,

with bottom side Sweden relegated to League C on four points.

Norway’s Erling Haaland almost got the home side off to a perfect start but his first-time shot after 20 seconds was brilliantly saved by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic,

setting the tone for a frustrating evening for the striker.
