which provided Barça with an excellent opportunity to close the gap on the Merengues in

the standings to just one point.

Real Madrid welcomed the promoted Girona, who are now suffering and keeping an eye on

the Spanish championship’s margins, on the 12th day of La Liga, without its captain and

recent Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema. Luka Modric’s spectacular goal gave the game a

frenzied start following a cross from Dani Carvajal on the right side (2nd). The Catalans

turned out to be the most dangerous team in the first act, despite Rodrygo‘s discovery of

the post on a shift from Fede Valverde (23rd). Yan Couto superbly matched Girona’s rapid

counterattack on the right wing before crossing for Valery Fernandez, whose header almost

missed the post (19th).

After Gazzaniga’s extremely laborious recovery, Valery took over to pass the ball to Yangel

Herrera, who unleashed a thunderous shot that was deflected by the crossbar a little while

afterwards (38th). At halftime, both teams enjoyed reasonably balanced possession with

more than 90% of passes being completed, but Madrid residents struggled to take

advantage of their opportunities in a practical and efficient manner. In the opening 45

minutes of the game, Michel Sanchez Muoz’s men weren’t unworthy and seemed to be quite

difficult for Casa Blanca to navigate around.

When Vinicius returned from the locker room, he took control of the situation and sterilely

directed Real’s counterattacks. The Girona no longer alarmed the Merengues, but they also failed to stop the trend. Nevertheless, the Brazilian followed Valverde’s excellent cross at the

far post, which had been sent in depth by Carvajal, to score the game’s first goal by tackling

(70th). The Carlo Ancelotti team nearly increased the advantage right away, but goalkeeper

Gazzaniga produced a quick save off of Marco Asensio’s powerful pivot recovery (72nd). Ten

minutes from the end, referee Mario Melero Lopez gave a penalty against all odds for a

hand from Asensio in the penalty area (78th). They appeared to have been firmly attached to

the body by Real’s striker.

Madrid attempted to retake the lead but had little success, and even had to play without

Toni Kroos who was sent for a second yellow at the very end of the game (91st). For a brief

time, Rodrygo thought he had given Real the win, but his goal was ultimately overturned for

a foul on the goalkeeper (90th). Therefore, Girona presents Barcelona, its Catalan neighbor,

with a kind gift (1-1). The colleagues of Aurélien Tchouaméni maintain their lead in the

standings, although they only have one point over FC Barcelona, their archrivals.

The Catalans, however, escape the danger zone and take up residence in position 16.
