Real Madrid welcomed the promoted Girona, who are now suffering and keeping an eye on
the Spanish championship’s margins, on the 12th day of La Liga, without its captain and
recent Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema. Luka Modric’s spectacular goal gave the game a
frenzied start following a cross from Dani Carvajal on the right side (2nd). The Catalans
turned out to be the most dangerous team in the first act, despite Rodrygo‘s discovery of
the post on a shift from Fede Valverde (23rd). Yan Couto superbly matched Girona’s rapid
counterattack on the right wing before crossing for Valery Fernandez, whose header almost
missed the post (19th).
After Gazzaniga’s extremely laborious recovery, Valery took over to pass the ball to Yangel
Herrera, who unleashed a thunderous shot that was deflected by the crossbar a little while
afterwards (38th). At halftime, both teams enjoyed reasonably balanced possession with
more than 90% of passes being completed, but Madrid residents struggled to take
advantage of their opportunities in a practical and efficient manner. In the opening 45
minutes of the game, Michel Sanchez Muoz’s men weren’t unworthy and seemed to be quite
difficult for Casa Blanca to navigate around.
