Switzerland defeats Serbia in a crazy match and qualifies for the final 16

The Swiss national team snatched the second qualification card to the final price of Group G, by defeating the Serbian national team 3-2 on Friday evening at the “974” stadium, at the end of the first round of the World Cup (Qatar 2022).

Switzerland’s goals were scored by Xherdan Shaqiri (20), Brill Embolo (44), and Remo Frawler (48), while Aleksandar Mitrovic (26) and Dusan Vlahovic (35) scored Serbia’s goals.

With this result, Switzerland ranked second in the group with 6 points, to set a date with Portugal in the final price, while the Serbian team came in last place with one point, 3 points behind Cameroon, which sparked a surprise by defeating Brazil with a clean goal.

Switzerland coach Murad Yakin relied on the 4-2-3-1 method, where Fabian Char played alongside Manuel Akanji deep in the back line, with the support of the full-backs Ricardo Rodriguez and Sylvain Widmer.

Remo Freiler was stationed with Granit Chaka in the middle of the field, and the trio Ruben Vargas, Djibril Sow, and Xherdan Shaqiri moved behind outright striker Brill Embolo.

On the other hand, Serbian coach Dragan Stojkovic resorted to the 3-4-1-2 method, where the back line consisted of Strahinja Pavlovic, Milos Velikovich and Nikola Milenkovic, and Philip Kostic and Andrea Zivkovic on both sides of the field.

While the duo, Sasha Lukic, and Sergey Milinkovic-Savic, were stationed in the middle of the field, and Dusan Tadic moved behind the attacking duo, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic.

Switzerland almost opened the scoring in the first minute, when Shaqiri followed a ball sent from the right wing before goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic shone in banishing the followers of Embolo and Xhaka.

Serbia responded in the fifth minute when midfielder Milinkovic Savic headed in a corner kick next to the goal.

Serbia missed a dangerous opportunity in the 11th minute, when Zivkovic penetrated from the left wing, before firing a low shot, which bounced off the far post, without Vlahovic being able to follow the ball into the net.

Switzerland managed to open the scoring in the 20th minute when Sow passed the ball to Shaqiri, who fired into the net towards the near post.

Goalkeeper Milinkovic Savic caught an easy shot from Shakiri in the 22nd minute, before Serbia could equalize the score in the 26th minute when Tadic lifted a cross from the left, Mitrovic followed it up with a header towards the far post.

Shakiri hit a free kick from the right side of the penalty area, far from the goal in the 30th minute, then Serbia took the lead in the 35th minute when Tadic’s pass inside the penalty area reached Vlahovic, who crawled out of reach of goalkeeper Kopil.

But Switzerland refused to come out of the first half, lagging behind in the result, so it scored the equalizer in the 44th minute, when it reached Widmer’s cross, crawling towards Embolo, who followed it strong into the net.

After 3 minutes into the second half, Switzerland regained the lead, when Vargas passed the ball with his heel towards Frelier, who shot from the middle of the penalty area into the goal.

In the 60th minute, Kostic’s cross rebounded from the Swiss defense, and the ball reached Tadic, who shot over the goal.

The Serbs demanded a penalty kick in the 65th minute after Mitrović fell after a joint game with Char, but the referee ordered the continuation of play.

Mitrovic tried to shoot, but the Swiss defense closed the space in front of him in the 71st minute.

The rhythm calmed down a little before Akanji executed a Swiss free kick, which hit the side net from the outside in the 83rd minute, then the header of Serbian substitute Jovic passed over the goal in stoppage time.
