Atlético Madrid was defeated by FC Porto at Dragao on Tuesday night (1-2), eliminating
them. Because to Bruges’ draw on Bayer Leverkusen’s field, the Portuguese win their group
(0-0). Transferred to the Europa League are the Germans.
Such a letdown for Atlético Madrid. The Colchoneros were on track to go to the Europa
League play-offs before being eliminated from the Champions League Round of 16 race last
week. With a one-point advantage over Bayer Leverkusen, the citizens of Madrid needed to
defeat FC Porto or, in the event that the Germans played poorly at home against Bruges at
the same time, just draw.
Finally, this Tuesday, Atlético suffered a loss (1-2) in Portugal, and Bayer earned the point
necessary to finish third against the Belgians (0-0, see elsewhere).
Dragao’s suspense was just momentary. Only five minutes had passed when Mehdi Taremi
rose to put the ball into the open cage on a cross from the right by Evanilson, greatly aided
by the Madrid defense’s apathy (5th).

The Iranian nearly became a passer after securing his position as the goal scorer, but
Wenderson Galeno tripped over Jan Oblak (13th).
Eleven minutes later, the Brazilian made up ground by defeating Stefan Savic on the left side
and serving the ball back to Stephen Eustaquio, who raced in to retake possession and trick
the Slovenian goalkeeper (24th). Without it, the addition might have been even sourer for
the Colchoneros, such as this procession against Otavio (37th). Ivan Marcano’s own goal
(90th + 5) allowed the Madrid citizens to score a goal from a corner in stoppage time. It is
far too late to attempt to secure his Europa League ticket. Thanks to this victory and
Brugge’s draw at Leverkusen, FC Porto won the championship.
Leverkusen and Club Brugge were neutralized (0-0) in the other group encounter following
a dull game despite the Germans’ dominance. The first opportunity of the game didn’t come
for Moussa Diaby until the 33rd minute, a cross shot that Simon Mignolet well stopped.
Frimpong had a good chance to start the scoring just before halftime but was unable to find
the net (45th). The home team might have gained the edge thanks to Patrik Schick’s header from a corner, but Simon Mignolet stopped it with a crucial close-range save (54′). The offensives were far too infrequent on the Bruges side. With the exception of Buchanan’s (47th) crossbar discovery, the Belgians lacked the knowledge necessary to trouble Leverkusen’s defense.
Due to the favorable goal differential, Xabi Alonso’s team may now overtake Atlético (4th) in third place and advance to the Europa League play-offs. Before the meeting, Bruges was already certain to place ninth, and the team placed second overall.
