“Football is not only a game, but it is also a competition to spread peace and love among the world”
Fifa suspended Russian national teams and clubs from all competitions, including the upcoming 2022 World Cup.This declaration came Today in a joint statement by FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, and UEFA, the sport’s European governing body, amid increased pressure to sanction Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Since few, FIFA and UEFA have decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice,” FIFA and UEFA said in the statement.
“These difficult decisions were made today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which are respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.
“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine.
Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”
The suspension is just days before Russia’s match against Poland kicks off on March 24 in the World Cup qualifier semi-final match in Qatar, which kicks off in November.. FIFA faced backlash Sunday after initially ruling that Russia would be permitted to compete without its flag and anthem and under the name of it’s federation, the Football Union of Russia.
