Outstanding Salah goal keeps Liverpool undefeated.
Liverpool match kept their perfect record intact despite Manchester City twice coming from behind in a 2-2 draw at Anfield thanks to a spectacular solo goal from Mohamed Salah.
As the champions controlled a scoreless first half, City’s goal scorers Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne had the greatest chances to break the scoreless tie.
On 59 minutes, though, Sadio Mane’s 99th Premier League goal gave Liverpool match the lead after Salah’s brilliant breakaway play.
After Gabriel Jesus had found him, Foden scored City’s equaliser on minute 69 with a drilled finish from an extreme angle.
On the 76th minute, Salah’s incredible solo effort gave Liverpool match the lead once again. He outran four Man City players and shot off the post from a tight angle.
Five minutes later, De Bruyne equalised with a shot from the edge of the box, and Fabinho, a midfielder for the Reds, was denied a late winner by an outstanding sliding block from Rodri.
Liverpool is still undefeated but now sits in second place with 15 points. They are one point and one position below Man City.
Salah quickly reminded everyone in the first half of the game why he merits the enormous contract. He received the game’s first significant opportunity when he slipped through the Manchester City defence, but his shot was stopped by the side netting.
A few minutes later, Kevin de Bruyne paid it forward by directing the ball to the corner of the 18-yard box. Virgil van Dijk thankfully moved the shot off-target for a corner. Poor free kick was awarded as a result.
In the opening 15 minutes, Liverpool appeared to be in greater control than the other team, but all their good build-up play resulted in was Salah’s attempt.
Liverpool not only had quicker reactions and better control during the game, but they were also intentionally swapping the ball back and forth across the breadth of the field. Their initial objective was achieved in one such occasion.
Thiago Alcantara received the ball from Dáz and delivered it on to Salah. A charging Trent Alexander-Arnold was given the ball by Salah. From just beyond the box, the youthful winger capitalised on the chance with his right foot and tucked the ball perfectly into the far corner.
After conceding the first goal,
City came out fighting, and Adrián was forced to make several big stops as Mahrez and de Bruyne both tried their luck. He did well to maintain his composure and handle the threat to keep Liverpool ahead as the first half progressed.
Liverpool led the game 1-0 at the half.
Later Half
City made a quick drive in the second half. Adrián successfully completed his task once more by stopping Mahrez in close.
It took Liverpool a good ten minutes to get back into the game, but they eventually started to dictate the pace of play. Should the Reds make a mistake,
Manchester City appeared prepared to quickly advance on the counterattack.
Darwin Nùez is given the chance to showcase his talents. To raucous applause from the Liverpool crowd, he took Firmino’s spot in the front three.
Alvarez ties the scoring for Manchester City after some debate and a VAR review. The linesman flagged Phil Foden’s opening effort as being offside. Alvarez snuck it in on the rebound after Adrián botched the stop. The goals stood because VAR found that Foden was onside during the buildup.
