Manchester United defeated Southampton in Mary’s Stadium
Manchester United defeated Southampton 1-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium,
ending their seven-game losing streak on the road after Bruno Fernandes scored the game-winning goal.
United had the initial shot at the goal, aiming for Southampton’s left side. A nice crossing position was worked by Diogo Dalot after he beat Moussa Djenepo in a 50/50 duel,
but the Portuguese’s delivery lacked the necessary quality to find Fernandes.

In the 18th minute,
Erik ten Hag’s team could have taken the lead after Southampton redefined what “heroic defending” is all about. Kyle Walker-Peters first showed quick thinking to stop Fernandes from scoring from close range,
and then Gavin Bazunu stopped Anthony Elanga’s follow-up attempt at his near post.

Kyle Walker-Peters displayed fast thinking to deny Fernandes a close-range goal,
and then Gavin Bazunu denied Anthony Elanga a second chance at goal at his near post.
After the break,
Scott McTominay attempted to score for Southampton,
but his shot was blocked by Bazunu after being set up by Elanga.
However,
United didn’t have to wait long to score the first goal thanks to a superb play down the right that allowed Dalot to have a chance to cross. The Portuguese player passed the ball to Fernandes,
a fellow countryman, who snuck into the penalty area unnoticed and cushioned an excellent volley into the bottom corner.
In the 65th minute, Southampton had a chance to tie the score when De Gea was pushed into action. Joe Aribo’s forceful header on an Adam Armstrong cross from the byline forced the United No. 1 to make a fantastic save,
and Walker-Peters glanced the rebound over.
The home team kept pressing for an equaliser,
and substitute Sekou Mara came dangerously near twice, but Ten Hag’s team held strong to secure their second straight victory.
Manchester United picked up their second win of the Premier League season in a 1-0 win against Southampton in the early kick-off. The Red Devil’s have moved to within a point of Manchester City before they play Crystal Palace
