Gabon draw with Morocco

Morocco took the lead in Group C, after its precious 2-2 draw against Gabon, today, Tuesday, in the last round of the group stage of the African Nations Cup.

Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal scored a penalty kick and Ashraf Hakimi scored in the 74th and 84th minutes. While Jim Alfinia and Nayef Akrd scored an own goal for Gabon in the 21st and 81st minutes.

The Moroccan team raised its score to 7 points, at the top of Group C, followed by Gabon with five points, then Comoros with 3 points, and finally Ghana with one point.

Match Events

The beginning of the confrontation was dominated by a kind of parity between the two teams until the 19th minute when Ayoub El Kaabi received a ball in the back of the Gabon defense. But he shot it weak in the hands of the goalkeeper.

Gabon’s reaction was not late, as Morocco punished Morocco for wasting Kaabi’s opportunity, after a long ball from goalkeeper Amonum. And striker Jim Alfinia arrived after a big mistake and a slip from the last defender Sofiane Chakla, to be exploited by the player and scored the first goal for Gabon.

The goal meant losing the lead from the Moroccan team in favor of Gabon. Which mobilized the Lions players to respond. The duo of Kaabi and Al-Nusairi returned to threaten the Gabon defense in the 25th minute. But the goalkeeper’s intervention thwarted this attack.

In front of the midfield gaps, coach Waheed resorted to making the first change. After he pulled Elias Shaer and replaced him with Salim Salt to restore the balance that seemed lacking. And it almost cost the Moroccan team a lot after the dangerous rebounds that Gabon players squandered in succession.

Gabon’s control was clearly evident in the 37th minute when the player Bubandza shot from a distance. And then in the 39th minute after Lloyd Ballon headed up and hit a strong ball. And in both attempts, the goalkeeper Al-Mohammadi was present strongly.

The beginning of the second half witnessed strong pressure for the Lions team, as Faisal Fajr fired a powerful shot from a distance, a creeping ball that almost deceived the goalkeeper, who hardly took it out to the corner.

Then Faisal Fajr returned to appear with a cross pass towards the second post, which Ayoub Al Kaabi was late in catching.

In front of the Moroccan team’s progress forward, the Gabon team relied on quick rebounds, approaching on two occasions the scoring, specifically in the 57th and 59th minutes through Alpinia.

The Moroccan team managed to score the equalizer by substituting Sofiane Boufal from a penalty kick and attacked the Moroccan team strongly to score the winning goal amid dangerous Gabonese rebounds.

Gabon took advantage of a double lapse between Nayef Akrad and Sufyan Chakla to score the second goal.

Morocco responded strongly by Achraf Hakimi, who scored the equalizer with a free kick from distance.
