With just over 30 minutes gone,

the hosts came dangerously close to taking the lead when Vladimir Coufal

looped a cross into the box after a superb passing move. Antonin Barak attempted the same move as Schick, presumably deterring the latter,

who missed the goal post with a downward header.

Portugal seized the lead a little while later. As he charged forward,

Diogo Dalot spotted Fernandes to his right. Leao picked up the errant cross that his Manchester United teammate fired into the box and passed it back to Dalot

as he charged. He completed the manoeuvre he had begun by pushing past Vaclik.

High drama occurred shortly before halftime when Portugal gave up a penalty after Mario Rui had just set up Fernandes for an easy finish to increase their lead. Ronaldo put up a hand, possibly to protect his bloody nose,

and touched the ball there.
So Schick took the opportunity to give his team a lead in the match,

but he blew it by clipping the crossbar with a rising shot that flew into the stands. Soon after the restart, Dalot scored again,

taking a touch on the edge of the box and slamming it home. Substitute Diogo Jota then completed the scoring with a close-range goal at a corner.

As a result of Spain’s 2-1 loss against Switzerland in Zaragoza, Portugal now leads by two points. Tuesday’s matchup in Braga will determine which team will have a chance to win the competition.

Dalot opened the scoring on 33 minutes as he nutmegged Czech goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik from a cutback provided by Rafael Leao.

Dalot sprinted down the pitch, passed the ball to his right and dashed into the box to pick up Leao’s pass from the left following a cross narrowly missed by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bruno Fernandes made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time as Mario Rui found him facing Vaclik with a low cross from the left.

The hosts missed a penalty chance a minute later when Patrik Schick shot over the crossbar after VAR had detected Ronaldo handled the ball inside the box.

On minute 52, Dalot added a second by shocking Vaclik with a low left-foot shot from outside the box.

Diogo Jota, a second-half replacement, headed in a late fourth goal from close range after a corner and Ronaldo’s errant header reached him at the far post.

Ronaldo clashed with Vaclik early in the game, leaving him with a bloody face, but he was unable to add to his record total of 117 international goals.

Just before halftime, the visitors increased their lead to 2-0, and once again a full back was responsible. Mario Rui’s tempting cross from the left was perfectly weighted for Bruno Fernandes to receive it and score.

When Patrik Schick was unable to convert from the penalty spot late in extra time towards the end of the first half, the hosts immediately lost a tremendous opportunity to get one back.

The full backs for Portugal engaged in more combat in the second half.
