Highlights and scores of Argentina vs Uruguay match
Argentina vs Uruguay match: Two goals in the minutes leading up to the break, one of which was an unusually lucky counterattack by Lionel Messi, gave Argentina a comfortable 3-0 victory over Uruguay in a World Cup qualifying match on Sunday.
Eight minutes before the break, Messi threw a 35-meter pass into the box, but both forward Nicolás González and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera missed it and somehow slipped into the net.
Six minutes later, Lautaro Martínez missed a chance on the edge of the area, but the loose ball fell on Rodrigo De Paul, who was not wrong.
Martínez made up for the mistake when he converted a low cross from De Paul in the second half in the 17th minute.
“We played a great game,” Messi said. “Everything went perfectly.”
“Uruguay is waiting for you and they create danger. When we got to the first door, we looked for space and the doors appeared”.
The victory, combined with Brazil’s 00th draw with Colombia earlier in the day, reduces the gap between leading Brazil and runner-up Argentina to six points at the top of the South American 10-team qualifying group.
The top four teams automatically qualify for Qatar and the fifth placed goes to an inter-regional tiebreaker.
Uruguay, which finished on the fourth day in the 10-team table, was unbeaten in the eight games leading up to Sunday’s game.
