The poor form of France in the Nations League continued on Friday evening with a 1-1 draw at Austria. With a solid showing in League A Group 1

Didier Deschamps’ squad was expected to limber up for the World Cup in style.

However, they are firmly on the back foot after a loss to Denmark and a draw with Croatia were followed by a second draw in Austria.

France has struggled in the Nations League,

with this being their second tie in three games (the other being a defeat).
The first 30 minutes of the match were tense, with Austria defending admirably to frustrate France, the current world champions.

After Patrick Pentz saved a free-kick, the visitors had their best chance of the half-hour.

Karim Benzema pounced on the rebound from close range,

but Pentz was quick to react and move the ball away from danger.

In attack,

Austria’s strategy was to wait for France to get possession of the ball in midfield before

launching an aggressive press and trying a counterattack.

This strategy paid off in the 37th minute, when Weimann scored on a well-worked goal by the home team.

The ball was lost in midfield by Antoine Griezmann,

and when Marko Arnautovic received it on the edge of the box, he waited for Konrad Laimer’s dashing overlap run before passing it on.

With a low, quick pass,

Laimer found Weimann in the area,

and the midfielder was able to send the ball into the bottom left corner, giving Austria the lead.

In the second half, France was much better on the ball and had multiple chances to equalise, but they squandered their opportunities.

When Mbappe was introduced, things started to look up

Following a 1-1 draw away to Austria on Friday evening, France dropped points for the third consecutive UEFA Nations League match.

Didier Deschamps made seven changes from the 1-1 draw with Croatia,

restoring Karim Benzema and Antoine Griezmann to the attack as the reigning champions sought their first victory.

After a solid start by the hosts,

France created the game’s first serious opening after 19 minutes when Patrick Pentz saved Griezmann’s free-kick before stopping Benzema on the rebound.

In the 37th minute, Andreas Weimann turned in Konrad Laimer’s cross to give Ralf Rangnick’s side the lead.

and he scored a leveller with seven minutes to go.

Marko Arnautovic raced past one challenge before hitting straight at Hugo Lloris from close range four minutes before the halfway break,

virtually doubling Austria’s lead.

Just before the hour mark,

France should have equalised when Kingsly Coman created space in the area, but he blasted horrifically over the crossbar with just Pentz to beat.

For the final 25 minutes, Deschamps made a double substitution,

with Kylian Mbappe and Matteo Guendouzi replacing Griezmann and Aurélien Tchouameni.

Mbappe scored the equaliser for France in the 83rd minute after combining with fellow substitute Christopher Nkunku to set up a thrilling finish.

With a goal from 12 yards, the Paris Saint-Germain striker almost completed the turnaround for the two-time World Cup winners, but Pentz produced a finger-tip stop to ensure a draw for both teams.
