A significant win for Chelsea in Champions League

A significant win for Chelsea!! ,

but from a match that was nothing like the sort of grand Champions League encounter anticipated.

Graham Potter’s first season in the competition now looks that much more forgiving,

and not just because he finally got that first victory in his second game and the club’s third this season. It was how easily that 3-0 win came or the fact they already go ahead of AC Milan.

Watch Chelsea’s victory goals!!

Chelsea climbed back into contention for a place in the Champions League last 16 with an impressive 3-0 victory against AC Milan on Wednesday.

Graham Potter’s side won for the first time in three Group E games as Wesley Fofana’s

first Chelsea goal was followed by second-half strikes

from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Reece James at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had kicked off their Champions League campaign with an embarrassing defeat

while Potter’s first match ended in a draw with Salzburg.

But second-placed Chelsea are now level with third-placed Milan

on four points ahead of a crucial trip to the San Siro to face the Italian champions again on October 11.

With three games left for each team,

group leaders Salzburg are one point above Chelsea after beating Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 on Wednesday.

Progress in the Champions League is essential to Potter’s

bid to stamp his authority on a squad expensively assembled by Chelsea’s new owners with immediate success in mind.

While Chelsea still have work to do to reach the knockout stage,

Potter will be encouraged by the most dynamic performance of his three games since replacing Tuchel.

Potter had never attended a Champions League game before taking charge at Chelsea,

so his first victory in the competition was a memorable milestone for the modest coach.

Fittingly,

it was achieved with minimum fuss as Chelsea set the tone from the moment Mason Mount’s curling effort forced a sprawling save from Ciprian Tatarusanu.

If that was an aesthetically pleasing way to take the game to Milan,

the Blues wrestled control with a more rudimentary aerial assault that left Milan battered and bruised.

So Exposing Milan’s weakness at set-pieces,

Thiago Silva met Mount’s free-kick with a header that Tatarusanu tipped over.

Moments later,

Silva threatened again with another header that deflected wide for the corner that produced Chelsea’s 24th-minute opener.

Chelsea 3-0 AC Milan: Graham Potter’s Post-Match Thoughts

Graham Potter gives his opinion on this evening’s game,

as his Chelsea side stormed to a 3-0 win over AC Milan in Group E.

Speaking to BT Sport,

the boss said he was happy with how his side applied themselves.

I’m delighted with the performance and the attitude. Clean sheet,

three goals, we had to suffer as well which is good to do as you have to do that at the top level. It’s a good start for us.”

Although Potter admitted his side looked a little tentative in the early stages,

but the opening goal was crucial for the rest of the game and the second goal was a cushion for the team to relax with.

I thought we started a little nervous, maybe five minutes,

which is just a result of us wanting to do so well. You saw the appetite,

pushing before the goal, the first goal was important.

To score the second gave us a bit of a breather. I can’t complain,

clean sheet, three goals, really good.”

The first Chelsea goal came courtesy of Wesley Fofana after 24 minutes,

but ten minutes later, the Frenchman was forced off with a knee injury. After the game,

he was seen leaving the stadium on crutches.

Another goal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. A first clean sheet. A comprehensive dismantling of the Italian champions in a must-win game.

Chelsea might be starting to click under recently hired manager Graham Potter.

The English team eased some of its early concerns in the Champions League by beating Milan 3-0 on Wednesday,

with Reece James setting up Aubameyang’s goal and ruthlessly dispatching another at Stamford Bridge.
