Everton, Chelsea began their Premier League campaign with a tenacious 1-0 victory away at
who under Frank Lampard showed indications of improvement after last season’s disaster that saw them forced into a relegation struggle. The Toffees more than match the Blues despite lacking a recognised striker,
but they are unable to get past Edouard Mendy.
He tells Sky Sports, “I’m probably frustrated, but not with our performance because I think we were extremely good. “On defence, we provided the players with a sound game plan since Chelsea likes to pick you up, pull you apart, and play through you, but we never let them do that save for one fleeting moment of inattention and a minor error on our part. I believe our boys gave it their all, so the only thing that frustrates me is the outcome.
After Abdoulaye Doucoure fouled Ben Chilwell in the box, Chelsea scored a goal when Jorginho converted a penalty.
Chilwell may face competition from Marc Cucurella,
but the England international was determined to show that he wouldn’t give up his spot easily.
After a protracted absence due to a catastrophic knee injury,

James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil, recent additions from Burnley who were both demoted, made their Premier League debuts for the Toffees as they started the season in a five-at-the-back configuration. Since Salomon Rondon is serving a ban from the previous season and Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffered a preseason knee injury, Everton was without a reliable striker.
Raheem Sterling, a former star for Manchester City, and centre back Kalidou Koulibaly started for the opposition team. Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva, two of the Premier League’s most seasoned defenders, were Koulibaly’s starting teammates, while Sterling partnered with fellow England international Mason Mount and 23-year-old Kai Havertz in attack.
