Mbappe had been left on the bench – as speculation mounts on the current rift between the French star and team-mate Neymar
– but came to the French champions rescue as a second half sub.
PSG took the lead on the half hour mark through a wonder free- kick from Lionel Messi. However, Nice,
who boasted both Aaron Ramsey and Ross Barkley in the starting line-up,
hit back through Gaeten Laborde right after half time,
before Mbappe’s 83rd minute winner.
Mbappe came off the bench on the hour mark and struck the winner
with seven minutes left after Nice attempted and failed to play the ball out of defence.
Kylian Mbappe came off the bench to score the winning goal as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Nice 2-1
on Saturday to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1.
French international Mbappe was left out of the starting line-up
by coach Christophe Galtier with one eye on Wednesday’s Champions League clash at Benfica.
Mbappe was replaced by 20-year-old Hugo Ekitike,
who was making his first start for PSG.
However,
it was fellow superstar Lionel Messi who grabbed the early attention when he gave PSG a 29th-minute lead with a sumptuous,
curling free-kick which sailed over the Nice wall and past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Gaetan Laborde levelled for Nice,
which was coached by Galtier until this season,
in the 47th minute after PSG got into a terrible defensive tangle.
Mbappe was summoned from the bench on the hour mark and struck the winner
with seven minutes left after Nice attempted and failed to play the ball out of defence.
The goal was Mbappe’s eighth of the league season
and took him level with teammate Neymar at the top of the scoring charts.
The 23-year-old France international came on in the 59th minute as Nice
were beginning to dominate the game at the Parc des Princes.
He latched on to Nordi Mukiele’s pass and stroked the ball under the Nice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
For the 15 minutes before his strike,
So Lucien Favre’s team held the ascendance. Driven forward by the tricksy Sofiane Diop and anchored by the veteran Dante,
they were more muscular in the challenges. And more menacing in possession.
Their renaissance was all the more noteworthy for their refusal
to buckle after yet another moment of genius from the left foot of Lionel Messi.
In the 28th minute,
the 35-year-old Argentine went on one of his trademark darts towards goal.
In addition Neymar and Messi stood over the ball for the free-kick. Neymar ran past it and Messi scooped it over the wall and past a flummoxed Schmeichel.
