Despite intense pressure, City were unable to come up with a late winner,

causing them to drop points for the first time this year.

Pep Guardiola’s team will be relieved that not all three points were lost on Tyneside,

given the score early in the second half.

Prior to Callum Wilson’s goal for Newcastle to go in ahead at halftime and Kieran Trippier’s thunderous free kick to give them a two-goal lead,

Miguel Almiron bundled in an equaliser.

Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva scored twice in five minutes for City to respond as required, but they were unable to score a winner or even mount a continuous attack in the closing minutes.

The decision by Pep Guardiola to merely substitute Nathan Ake for Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez was therefore puzzling.

Was he stressing the importance of squad depth to the club’s management? Or did he just have faith in his team to get themselves out of a jam?
