PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands advanced to the European Football League’s (European
League) knockout rounds by defeating Arsenal 2-0 at home today, Thursday, in the fifth
round of Group A fixtures.
In the same round, Swiss Zurich defeated its visitor, Bodo Glimt of Norway, 2-1.
Despite the defeat, Arsenal, who suffered its first setback in the group stage, maintained the
lead with 12 points, two points more than Eindhoven, its nearest opponent.
Bodo Glimt maintained his position in third place with four points, while Zurich ranked last
with three points.
Joey Fermann scored the first goal for the Dutch team in the 56th minute, and Luke de Jong
added the second goal in the 63rd. PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal each scored two goals in the
second half.
Since the previous round, Arsenal had made sure that it had advanced from the group stage.
However, in order to maintain its lead in the standings and subsequently advance directly to
the round of 16, it needed to defeat Zurich in its final group match.
It is noted that the third-place clubs from the Champions League’s group stage will face the
runners-up from the eight European League groups in the round of 32.
In the second group, Fenerbahce of Turkey and Rennes of France were forced to a positive
3-3 draw, and AEK Larnaca of Cyprus and Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine also ended in a draw.
The competition between Fenerbahce and Rennes reduced to claiming first place in
their respective groups as they both qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament
since the previous round.
With 11 points, Fenerbahce maintained its lead over Rennes, its closest opponent, by one
goal. Larnaca came in third with 4 points, while Dynamo Kyiv finished last with 1.
PSV Eindhoven vs Arsenal
Real Betis of Spain, who defeated Ludogorets Razagrad of Bulgaria 1-0, advanced to the round of 16 in Group C.
After increasing his total to 13 points, 6 points more than second-placed Ludogorets, Betis
assured himself the top spot in the group and the end of his career there.
The same round will be played later in the day in Helsinki, Finland, which finished last with
one point, and Rome, Italy, which is currently in third place with four points.
In Group D, where the German Union Berlin defeated its Portuguese guest, Sporting
Braga, 1/0, Saint-Gilloise also advanced to the round of 16, defeating its Swedish host Malmo 2-0.
Saint-Gilloise maintained its position in the lead after increasing its score to 13 points, 4
points ahead of its closest rivals. Union Berlin, who improved by two points over Braga,
which dropped to third place, and Malmo, who was in last place and had no points,
rekindled their playoff ambitions.
