THE LOS ANGELES – Real Madrid defeated Juventus 2-0 in a preseason friendly on Saturday at California’s Rose Bowl after Karim Benzema scored from the penalty spot early on and Marco Asensio added a goal for insurance in the second half.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti started the same squad that defeated Liverpool in the Champions League final in May with Real Madrid’s European Super Cup match against Eintracht Frankfurt in mind.

After a 1-0 loss to La Liga rivals Barcelona in Las Vegas and a 2-2 tie with Mexico’s Club America in San Francisco, they produced the first win of Real Madrid’s American tour.

Eight seconds into the match, French star Benzema’s goal was overturned because he was caught offside by Uruguayan Federico Valverde’s through ball while fans were still pouring into the seats.

In the 13th minute, Juventus had their best opportunity of the game, but Leonardo Bonucci’s straight free kick hit the crossbar.

In the 19th minute, Benzema took a penalty kick and calmly drilled it into the bottom left corner of the goal after Juventus’ Danilo fouled fellow Brazilian Vinicius Junior in the area with a clumsy move.

Juventus had their best opportunity of the game in the 13th minute, but Leonardo Bonucci’s direct free kick hit the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Ancelotti made nine replacements, and Benzema was one of the players to leave the field.

At the Rose Bowl, the magnificent stadium tucked into the foothills northeast of Los Angeles that served as the location for the 1994 World Cup final, he received an enthusiastic cheer from the 93,702 mostly pro-Real audience.

Asensio, one of the replacements, made an immediate impact by using his left foot to sweep a cross from the left by Jesus Vallejo into the goal.

In a game in which Juventus seldom put Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to the test, it was sufficient to secure the victory.
