Everton moved with a great luck on Boreham Wood!

Boreham Wood and Everton With their run, the Hertfordshire club has been the story of the tournament thus far,

but they were undone by Salomon Rondon‘s two second-half goals,

despite a brave attempt cheered on by thousands of travelling fans.

Boreham Wood‘s remarkable FA Cup adventure came to an end, but not before forcing Premier League Everton to dig deep for a tight fifth-round win.

Seamus Coleman set up the Venezuelan striker,

who steered in a shot just before the hour mark and then headed in a second late in the game from a corner to break the tie.

Richarlison also had a shot on goal, but VAR ruled it out for handball,

adding salt to the wounds after the penalty the Blues were denied by the technology against Manchester City at the weekend.

They labored for much of the game as the visitors put up a masterclass in how to frustrate a greater opponent, defending with knowledge and tenacity.

Boreham Wood was greeted with applause as he exited the competition with more than just gate receipts and television money in his pocket!

Before the game, there were also emotional scenes,

with both sets of players carrying Ukrainian flags onto the field in solidarity of the country and its people following Russia‘s invasion.

The tune of Z Cars – the customary hymn used to welcome teams to Goodison Park – was then changed to John Lennon‘s ‘Imagine,’

with the players holding up a banner that read:

‘Imagine all the people, sharing all the planet.’

Everton’s players draped the Ukraine flag over their shoulders in an emotional show of support pre match

Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard referred to the game as a “free hit” –

a no-lose situation in which his team could attack knowing that everyone expected them to lose badly.

The Boreham Wood boss, on the other hand, is certainly wiser than that,

as evidenced by the clever way in which he set up his team to stifle the home side and capitalize on their anxieties.

His team, who used a flat back five and was adequately aided by hardworking defensive midfielders,

held off a side full of internationals for nearly an hour.

Every fluffed shot, mishandled pass,

and cleared cross was greeted with cheers from the away end, who eventually burst into song,

proclaiming that they were on their way to Wembley.

That would not be the case thanks to Salomon Rondon‘s second-half double,

which also saved Everton‘s blushes.

Watch the crazy goals of the match!

The home side were terrible, but they deserved to win,

with Boreham Wood ‘s only genuine attempt at goal coming from Tyrone Marsh after he was awarded the ball by careless defence.

Richarlison’s disallowed goal preceded two more attempts from the Brazilian,

one beautifully saved and the other blocked,

and the Toffees could easily have added to the tally by the finish.

But, with all due respect to the Toffees,

the evening was not really about them

Frank Lampard intimated as much in his program notes when he stated that it was “all business” for his team.

So, the Blues players exited the field,

leaving the Boreham Wood players and fans to revel in the romance and the incredible run that saw them come within one stage of matching Lincoln’s record of being the first non-league team

to reach an FA Cup quarter-final!!
