Insane match from Benfica in the Champions League!

Match in brief: Darwin swoops to conquer

Benfica kept the Dutch side at arm’s length with some comfort until they won a free-kick near the corner flag with 13 minutes left.

The first half was all Ajax, much like when the clubs met in Lisbon.

Antony menaced down the right, Duan Tadi plotted on the left,

and Ryan Gravenberch gently strolled in the middle like a man in velvet slippers.

Despite their superiority,

the hosts had nothing to show for it at halftime.

Soualiho Meïté came on to interrupt Ajax’s flow,

Álex Grimaldo swung it in and Darwin rose majestically above his marker and past the onrushing André Onana to send the Eagles through.

Darwin Nunez scored the winner as Benfica beat Ajax in Amsterdam to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

The return leg was much tighter after an enthralling first leg ended 2-2 in Lisbon,

and the visitors had done nothing to threaten when Nunez struck.

With 13 minutes remaining,

the Uruguayan beat Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana to head in a whipped free-kick.

Sebastien Haller had the ball in the net early on for Ajax

, but Dusan Tadic was offside during the build-up.

Despite their possession,

the hosts were unable to break down a resolute Benfica defence led by veteran

centre-backs Nicolas Otamendi and Jan Vertonghen,

who previously played for Ajax and Spurs.

Watch the winning fabulous goal of Benfica today!!

Vertonghen, a Belgian, also missed a rare chance for the visitors,

who showed little ambition and appeared most likely to threaten from a set-piece.

And that’s exactly what happened,

with Nunez scoring the game-winning goal off Alex Grimaldo’s wonderful ball.

Antony had looked lively for the Dutch side,

firing a long-range effort on goal before sending another effort over the crossbar as the mood inside the Johan Cruyff Arena began to become tense.
