Wales returns to the FIFA World Cup, after 64 years

Despite a last-ditch attempt to equalize, Hennessey’s goalkeeping heroics and Gareth Bale’s exquisite free-kick were the difference as Wales qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1958.

1′ Ukraine starts the game on the attack with Zinchenko in the Welsh half, but Wales pushed

the men in blue back into their half, attempting to absorb the pressure.


Save! 22′ Ukraine continues on the offensive, but Tsigankov’s final touch is again intercepted

by Hennessey, who refuses to be beaten time and time again. 23′ Chance! Ramsey makes a

move down the right flank for Wales, and he crosses for James, but the Leeds man fails to

reach the area in time.

Shot at 26′! In the midifield, Zinchenko receives the ball and attempts a goal. It is, however,

blocked when Ampadu stops it 28′ offside! Tsygankov attacks the Welsh defense from

behind, surges into the opposition box, and shoots. The linesman raises his flag at that

precise moment.


31′ Another excellent stop by Hennessey! Tsigankov receives the ball from Yaremchuk in the

box, but the keeper makes a critical touch, forcing a corner kick.


Yellow Card, 32′! Daniel James tries to make a break down the right flank, but Mykolenko

blocks him with his elbow, and the referee books the player for the second time in the

game.

34′ GOAL Gareth Bale shoots, and the ball deflected into the net by Yarmolenko.


44′ Every Ukrainian player wears a red shirt as the country tries to qualify for the World Cup

for the first time in 64 years. 45+1′ Davies obtains the ball for Moore, but his header ruled

offside. Dan James shoots from the edge of the box, but Buschan saves.

Miss! 49′ Moore breaks down the right side, receives the ball from James, and passes to Ramsey, whose effort is weak given the circumstances, and Wales misses an opportunity to extend their lead.
Chance at 53′! Moore heads a long shot into the centre, but the ball thrown out for a throw-in by Ramsey. Buschan catches Mykolenko’s headed deflection and throws him to safety.
Save at 55′! Ukraine launches an attack, with Yarenmchuk firing the final shot. Hennessey, on the other hand, produces a great stop to deny the equaliser.

64′ Opportunity! Bale makes a move down the left flank, beating the defender on the left, but Ukraine has enough back-up to clear the ball.
82′ Wales attempts a counter-attack and called for a foul, with Williams receiving the penalty. Wales gets a free kick!
Free Kick at 85′! Ramsey leads a breakaway attack for Wales, who passes to Wilson, who is fouled on the edge of the box 90+2′. Zinchenko sends in a cross from outside the box, but Ben Davies intercepts it and clears it away.
